VinFast, a recent upstart attempting to challenge Tesla, is making a rash entry into India. According to the plan, beginning with the VF 6 and VF 7 electric SUVs in 2025, the automaker is partnering with RoadGrid, an operator of EV infrastructure, to build a solid charging and after-sales ecosystem.
Charging and After-Sales Network
About RoadGrid, an organization that deploys fast chargers within several Indian cities and provides multi-brand servicing solutions for EVs, will collaborate with VinFast in rolling out a nationwide highway charging network complemented by extended-service workshops and real-time technical support.
Premium Ownership Experience
VinFast Asia CEO Pham Sanh Chau noted that this alliance aims to make EV ownership 'effortless and reassuring,' while RoadGrid’s CEO Deepesh Shrinath described the VinFast India debut as a 'turning point' in the formation of smart, connected EV ownership.
Location & Scope: VinFast is making an investment of US$500 million (around ₹4,000 crore) to establish a plant in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, over a 400-acre plot of land in SIPCOT Industrial Estate.
Timeline for Construction: The plant is scheduled to become operational by mid-2025, with full production commencing by early Q3 2025.
Capacity and Scale-up: The initial assembly will be in the form of CKD kits for 50,000 units annually, with scalability to 150,000 units annually, catering to both domestic sales and exports to the Middle East and Africa.
Job Creation: It is expected to provide approximately 3,000–3,500 local employment opportunities, thereby significantly enhancing the regional economy.
Launch Timeline: VF 6 and VF 7 are scheduled for launch before the 2025 festive season.
RHD Customization: Both models will be configured as right-hand drive and customized for the Indian market, demonstrating VinFast's strong interest in this region.
Comprehensive EV Support: VinFast's India strategy has also considered not just vehicle launches but charging infrastructure, after-sales services, the possibility of battery manufacturing, and even the location of a second plant in Andhra Pradesh.
The EV Growth in India: This move is closely aligned with India’s goal of achieving 30% EV sales by 2030. VinFast partnering with RoadGrid gives a strong start to alleviating range anxiety and other service concerns in Indian consumers.
Tesla Rivalry: VinFast, with its full-stack approach—from local manufacturing to charging and after-sales support—represents an alternative to Tesla, thereby increasing competition in India’s premium EV segment.
Export Hub for Region: The Thoothukudi paradigm is anticipated to become a major export hub, thereby upgrading India among the global ranks of the EV supply chains.
Localization Ends Ecosystem Synergy: With manufacturing, charging, and servicing, VinFast endorses the whole Make in India initiative and with it, India`s EV push.
VinFast's India launch is a major moment in the country's EV space. Gateway for a proposed $500-million plant at Tamil Nadu and a partnership with RoadGrid that would create a promising ecosystem for the VF 6 and VF 7.
If well implemented, this integrated strategy can truly compete with Tesla and overhaul the premium EV scene in India.
