The Bajaj Chetak is a motor scooter produced by the Indian company Bajaj Auto. Named after Chetak, the horse of the Indian warrior Maharana Pratap, the scooter's original petrol version was licensed from the Italian Vespa Sprint. It took 10 years of waiting period to make it one of the affordable means of transportation for Indian urban upper-middle-class families, marketed under the tagline 'Hamara Bajaj.'
Bajaj Chetak has secured the No.1 by volume and value in the Indian electric vehicle 2-wheeler segment for the last quarter of 2024–2025 with a 29% market share.
"We are happy to reach this coveted milestone. Chetak has once again become a customer favourite, from ICE to its electric avatar. This is a result of our curated strategy of differentiated offerings and focus on customer experience and service network", said Eric Vas, President, Urbanite Business Unit, Bajaj Auto.
A Pune-based automaker sold 34,907 electric scooters in March, cornering 27% market share during April. TVS Motor Company stood second with sales of 30,477 e-scooters and 23% market share. Bhavish Aggarwal-led Ola Electric came in third with 18% market share, according to FADA. IPO-bound Alter Energy sold 15,467 electric two-wheelers, accounting for 12% market share.
The company's press release further stated that this achievement is also a triumphant return for the legendary brand which dominated Indian roads during the 70s, 80s, and 90s. Repositioned for today, the electric Bajaj Chetak has not only restored its heritage—winning back the faith of Indian buyers—but also regained its position as the leader in India's electric scooter segment.
He added, "This is the outcome of our carefully curated strategy of differentiated offerings, customer experience and service network. On the strength of the 'Best Chetak Yet' – the 35 series, which has now become a significant part of our electric portfolio, we are eagerly looking forward to more riders joining the Chetak family in the months to come."
The Bajaj sells the Chetak in two variants: 3501 and 3502, both for Rs 1.22 lakh, according to ex-showroom price. Both the Bajaj Chetak variants are powered by a 3.5 kWh battery pack and boast a range of 153km. The variants differ in equipment and features as well, such as sequential blinkers, colour, and so on.
The Bajaj Chetak, a legendary scooter reborn as an EV, has achieved No. 1 in the Indian electric two-wheeler market with a 29% share in the last quarter and led March sales with 27%, marking a triumphant return fueled by strategic offerings and customer trust.
