OpenAI and Tata Group have announced a partnership that combines a ChatGPT Enterprise rollout with new AI-ready data centre capacity in India. OpenAI said the plan will deploy ChatGPT Enterprise to Tata companies and their workforce over several years, starting with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS).

OpenAI said it will become the first customer of TCS’s HyperVault data centre business. It will start with 100 megawatts of capacity and could scale to 1 gigawatt over time.

OpenAI launched the “OpenAI for India” initiative at the India AI Impact Summit 2026 in Delhi. OpenAI announced the details on February 18, 2026, and said India now has more than 100 million weekly ChatGPT users.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said the company wants to “build AI with India, for India, and in India.” Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran said the partnership will support “state-of-the-art AI infrastructure in India.”

ChatGPT Enterprise rollout across Tata companies

OpenAI said Tata Group plans to roll out ChatGPT Enterprise to employees, beginning with hundreds of thousands of TCS staff. OpenAI described the deployment as one of the largest enterprise AI rollouts announced to date.

The companies have not disclosed the value of the Enterprise deal or the expected completion date.

TCS said it will use OpenAI’s Codex to support AI-native software development across engineering teams. The companies said they will also co-develop industry solutions that pair OpenAI models with TCS delivery and domain expertise. The partners have not released product roadmaps or sector timelines.

HyperVault's capacity to support data residency and security

OpenAI said it will use HyperVault capacity to run advanced models securely within India. It said the local setup will reduce latency. OpenAI also linked the capacity to data residency, security, and compliance needs, including government workloads.

The 100-megawatt starting point reflects the power available for AI servers and cooling. OpenAI has not said when it expects HyperVault to reach each expansion stage.

The data centre work sits within Stargate, OpenAI’s broader infrastructure programme. Reuters reported Stargate as a $500 billion, multi-year initiative to build AI data centres for training and inference. Reuters also reported that TCS disclosed expansion plans last year. It said TCS could invest up to $7 billion in a 1 gigawatt data centre unit in India.

OpenAI certifications and ChatGPT Edu licences in India

OpenAI said it will expand OpenAI Certifications in India. TCS will become the first participating organisation outside the United States. OpenAI said the certifications will target practical AI skills across roles and industries.

OpenAI also said it has signed education partnerships that provide more than 100,000 ChatGPT Edu licences. It listed early partners for the licences. They include the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad and the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi.

OpenAI also named Manipal Academy of Higher Education, University of Petroleum and Energy Studies, and Pearl Academy. OpenAI said it will open offices in Mumbai and Bengaluru later in 2026, adding to its existing presence in New Delhi.

PTI reported that the Tata-OpenAI collaboration includes a social impact track. PTI said the partners aim to train Indian youth and develop tools intended to improve the livelihoods of 10 lakh people. PTI did not report financial terms or a delivery schedule for that workstream.
